JSTA’s Data Analysis programme gives participants hands-on experience in collecting, organising, analysing and presenting data while developing the analytical thinking and digital skills increasingly required across modern workplaces.

Your Data Learning Pathway

Duration: 3 Months | 6 Months | 1 Year
Format: Initial Training | Individual Data Tasks | Group Analysis Projects | Hybrid Working Module
Group Size: Up to 10 participants

Participants begin with essential training in data handling and analysis before progressing to independent assignments and collaborative projects. The Hybrid Working Module provides experience in sharing data securely, attending virtual meetings, managing tasks and presenting findings within a team environment.

What Participants May Do

Participants can gain experience with activities commonly undertaken in junior data and business intelligence roles, including:

  • Collecting, organising and validating datasets
  • Cleaning incomplete or inconsistent data
  • Working with spreadsheets and data-analysis tools
  • Identifying patterns, trends and relationships
  • Creating charts, graphs and visual reports
  • Producing dashboards and performance summaries
  • Checking data quality and accuracy
  • Presenting findings to colleagues or project teams
  • Handling information responsibly and securely

As participants develop, they may progress to more advanced activities involving statistical analysis, automated data processing, database queries, interactive dashboards, predictive modelling and introductory machine-learning techniques.

What Candidates Can Learn

The current JSTA programme introduces participants to fundamental and advanced areas of data analysis, from data cleaning and exploratory analysis through to statistical inference, predictive modelling and machine learning.

Data Preparation & Cleaning
Learn how to organise raw datasets, identify missing or inaccurate information, correct inconsistencies and prepare data for analysis.

Excel, Python & Data Tools
Develop experience using tools such as Excel, Python or R to organise, manipulate, analyse and visualise information, reflecting the technologies already highlighted in JSTA’s existing programme.

Data Visualisation & Reporting
Learn how to transform analysis into understandable charts, dashboards and reports that communicate findings clearly to different audiences.

Statistics & Predictive Analysis
Explore statistical methods, relationships within data and introductory predictive techniques that can help organisations identify trends and make informed decisions.

Data Ethics, Privacy & Security
Understand responsible data handling, confidentiality, potential bias and the importance of protecting sensitive information—an important part of the existing JSTA course content.

Practical Data Projects

Participants may apply their skills through practical or simulated projects such as:

  • Business Performance Dashboard – Analyse organisational data and present key performance indicators
  • Customer & Marketing Analysis – Explore audience, campaign or engagement data to identify trends
  • Data Cleaning Project – Transform an unstructured dataset into accurate, usable information
  • Survey & Community Data Project – Analyse responses and communicate important findings
  • Reporting Project – Produce charts, summaries and recommendations for decision-makers
  • Predictive Analysis Project – Explore historical data to identify patterns and potential future outcomes

Where appropriate, projects may use anonymised or non-sensitive information relating to business, charity, community or JSTA activities, allowing participants to understand how data analysis supports real organisational decisions.

From Data to Career Skills

Alongside technical capabilities, participants can strengthen analytical thinking, problem-solving, accuracy, attention to detail, communication, teamwork and evidence-based decision-making.

The programme can support participants exploring pathways such as Junior Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Assistant, Reporting Analyst, Marketing Data Analyst, Data Support Assistant, Junior Business Analyst and other data-focused roles. The current page also identifies data science, business intelligence and marketing analytics as relevant career areas.
